The Eco Bat Shelter is a wedge-shaped crevice designed to be installed within buildings and structures. The shelter can be placing in frost free locations such as tunnels, cellars and unheated loft spaces to provide a winter hibernation roost space.
It comprises a weatherproof plastic outer shell (for thermal insulation) and a ceramic insert (providing thermal inertia and good footholds) to stabilise the humidity and temperature of the microclimate within the roost space. The insert is held together with stainless steel staples, so it is impervious to damp and suitable for areas of high humidity, as favoured by bats during hibernation.
Recycled plastic converted from used polythene bags, discarded bale wrap and other agricultural plastic waste is reformed into tough sheets and precision cut to create the outer shell. The shell is held together with an ingenious system of tabs which avoids the need to use any fixings which could rust, thus extending the lifespan. The plastic has been UV stabilised and has a life expectancy of around 20 years.
The design allows bat droppings to simply fall out, so the shelter requires no maintenance and can easily be checked with a torch to minimise disturbance to the bats.
This Eco Bat Shelter has four screw holes so it can be securely fixed to concrete, brick, stone or wood. It is lightweight and easy to install. If there are any gaps around the edge of the shelter as a result of uneven walls, these can be sealed with silicone or foam strips to reduce draughts and make the shelter more attractive to bats.
This Shelter is available in a choice of colours – Black or Brick.
Please note: Bats and roosts are protected by law and you should only disturb a bat shelter to check it if you hold an appropriate licence.
