It’s tempting to build your own structures in the garden and whilst a BBQ has quite simple straight lines, a pizza oven is a different ball game altogether with domes and arches. Unless you are a Master Builder, the chances are your dome could be uneven affecting the air circulation in the oven…… and even worse, you may experience fallen arches!
This quality Mila 60 DIY pizza oven kit is made in Britain and takes a lot of the uncertainty about your building skills away, so you will have a perfectly shaped dome and arch. That just leaves you with the job of mastering the finish!!
With a suitable platform for your pizza oven, start by fixing the pre-cut insulation board with a small amount of supplied silicone.
There are five pre-cast sections for the dome and five for the floor. Designed to interlock, each section is easy enough for one person to manipulate. Once formed, it is just a case of going around the joints with fire cement, both inside and out.
The kit also includes body soluble ceramic insulation to cover the dome, a stainless steel flue, painted mild steel door, chicken wire and fire cement.
Once you have constructed the pre-cast sections, fix the steel arch to the front of the dome with silicone then instigate the insulation process by covering the dome with a layer of ceramic insulation and chicken wire.
Insert the flue, securing it in place with silicone.
The oven is now ready for you to render or finish as desired, be that a smooth natural or painted render, or with tiles, stone facings, mosaic, etc. We have two alternative renders available, depending upon whether you wish to add to the thermal mass of the oven, or not - a Heatproof Screed or an Outdoor Oven Cement (see separate listings).
You will then need to cure the oven before use, gradually raising the temperature to evaporate any moisture and prevent cracking. This process will need to be followed at the start of each season. Details of the curing process are included with the kit.
Thanks to the high quality refractory materials and 70mm thick dome, the oven will heat up quickly within an hour. With excellent thermal properties it is capable of reaching a maximum temperature of 600°C and will retain the heat for a long time. Consequently, when you have finished cooking pizzas, you can use the residual heat to casserole, bake or slow roast joints making it economic on fuel.
The internal dimensions of the finished oven are 77cm deep x 60cm wide x 30cm high which provides the capacity to cook one large 12” pizza or 2 small 10” pizzas at a time.
The complete kit weighs in at a substantial 160kg and whilst the individual components can easily be dealt with by one person, it is suggested you will require the assistance of 4-5 people to unpack it. Supplied with full assembly instructions and details of the curing process, this kit is delivered on a pallet by courier.
For excellent pizzas with crispy bases, bread, pastries and a whole host of other delights, this DIY pizza oven kit is perfect.
