If you love gardening, then you will know the benefits of using compost. If you make your own compost, not only do you enrich the soil, helping it to retain moisture and suppress diseases and pests, but you reduce methane emissions in landfill sites and lower your carbon footprint.
This sturdy composter comes flat packed with full instructions for construction and is supplied with a hinged lid that can be attached to any side, so in the event a hinge point gets damaged you can simply move the lid to another side.
Each of the sides has a slide opening allowing easy access to the finished compost. Holes at the base of the walls allow the composter to be anchored using suitable ground pegs, if required. Ground pegs are not included.
The ideal site for a compost bin is in half shade, in direct contact with soil to allow the essential organisms access to your compost so they can work at breaking it down.
Compost should be made of up layers of garden waste, woody materials and leaves and food waste. Individual layers should not be thicker than 15cm and to avoid the build up of smells, it should be forked over to lightly mix and let fresh air in. The rotting process depends on mixing, contents, moisture and temperature – it may be necessary to water from time to time, particularly in the summer.
The finished product is humus, a rich nutrient filled material, dark brown in colour and grainy in appearance, which smells like a forest floor.
