Boasting great eco credentials, this Tawny Owl Nest Box has been designed and made in the UK from recycled plastic and waste wood.
The wood is sourced from waste and saplings during the management of forests. It is formed into Oriented Strand Board then used to make the nesting chamber.
The outer shell is made from recycled plastic, much of which is collected from British farms rather than going to landfill. This is processed into sheets and UV stabilised before being precision cut and held together with an ingenious system of tabs, to avoid the use of fixings which may cause rust. The outer shell is weatherproof with an expected lifespan of at least 20 years.
The wooden nesting chamber has drainage holes and can easily be removed from the outer shell by simply twisting a fastening at the bottom and sliding it out, to check or clean the box.
This nest box is suitable for a pair of tawny owls to raise a brood. Since tawny owls do not like to be disturbed, the best position for a nestbox is in a fairly secluded spot, ideally in a woodland rather than on the fringes. The box should be at least 3m high with branches nearby so the chicks can exercise when fledging. It should also face away from prevailing winds to protect the nest from heavy rain.
