This large quality weathervane depicting an Ox has a sleek, durable finish. To increase the adhesiveness of paint and prevent corrosion, the 1.5mm thick steel has been treated with a metal phosphate solution then powder coated with black polyester paint.
The UV stabilised polyester paint has a high solid content and so adds strength, making the weathervane less susceptible to scratching and chemical cleaning.
The year of the Ox is the second of the 12 year cycle of animals which appear in the Chinese zodiac. According to one myth, the order of the zodiac was to be determined by the order in which the animals arrived at the Jade Emperor’s party. The Ox was about to arrive first when the Rat tricked the Ox into giving him a ride, jumping down ahead of the Ox, hence the Ox became the second animal.
Oxen are commonly castrated adult male cattle, making them easier to control. Used for ploughing, hauling wagons and threshing grain. They are usually yoked in pairs and are thought to have first been harnessed and put to work around 4000 BC.
This weathervane depicts a magnificent muscular beast with head down, horns on display.
