This large black chimney sweep weathervane is made from 1.5mm thick steel. The steel has been treated with a metal phosphate solution to increase the adhesiveness of paint and prevent corrosion then powder coated with a polyester paint for a sleek finish.
The polyester paint has a high solid content and therefore adds strength, making the weathervane less susceptible to scratching and chemical cleaning. It is also UV stabilised.
Throughout the centuries chimney sweeps have been associated with good luck. To see a chimney sweep on your wedding day was considered good luck, though it was felt to be more fortunate to shake the hand of a sweep or for the bride to be kissed by a sweep.
One legend suggests the superstition started when a chimney sweep fell off a roof but was saved from falling to the ground when his foot got caught in the gutter, hanging him upside down. A young woman who had promised to wed another man pulled the sweep to safety and they fell in love, eventually getting married.
Another legend tells, that in around 1066, a chimney sweep pushed King William of Britain out of the way of an oncoming horse and carriage, almost certainly rescuing him from death. One of the King’s rewards was to invite the sweep to his daughter’s wedding and ever since, it has been considered good luck to have a chimney sweep at your wedding or indeed, any special occasion.
This quality weathervane perfectly captures a Sweep, wearing his top hat, cleaning a chimney with a friendly cat for company.
